| Staff
at IDS enjoyed a training day with a difference thanks to 80 djembes, congas,
bodhrans, bongos and other percussion instruments from around the world.
Motivational training company Drum Dynamics facilitated the annual staff
conference with a range of workshops including a drum circle, meditation
session and an hour spent exploring the “story” of a homeless
family and their offer of housing through the use of rhythm, drums and hand
percussion. Drum circles can be likened to a percussion orchestra accessible for first time drummers or those with no previous musical knowledge. IDS Chief Executive, Paul Westbrook said “We were looking for an awayday that was a little different to the usual staff conference that was both inclusive and enjoyable for all our staff from caretakers through to the senior managers. The drum circle experience has helped reinforce our focus on the importance of teamwork and listening to each other. It emphasised the essential role that each individual plays within the organisation as a whole.” The use of drums and percussion – used for many centuries as a communication forum in tribal cultures – has been embraced by many US-based businesses in recent years for team building and to enhance listening skills. Feedback has shown a wide range of benefits with drum circle members embracing and enjoying the new creative experience to the full. Drum Dynamics Director, Marie Page, says “We have found drum circles to be a fantastic way of helping with team building, and also highly therapeutic in terms of stress relief”. Staff at the IDS awayday were very positive about the experience. The following quotes express some of their feelings: “Using the drums in a large group showed how important it is to all pull in the right direction” “Drum Dynamics was a great idea for a staff conference. It was far more inclusive than other training events I have been to, was much more entertaining and everyone was able to participate.” “This was far better than the usual staff conference. All the staff took part as a whole group rather than sitting around bored listening to others talking” “I feel much more relaxed and de-stressed” “The drum circle was good way to relax tension and do something different and enjoyable with my colleagues” |
