What is Shared Ownership?

Shared ownership, is a part rent, part buy scheme. IDS has developed a small but growing portfolio of shared ownership flats and houses since 2002.

At Wilmer Place, Hackney we built five 3-bedroom shared ownership houses in partnership with Notting Hill Housing Trust who developed and marketed the scheme on our behalf. Today most of the original Wilmer Place owners have either sold or staircased to full ownership.

Since that initial project Zone Agents have been appointed by the Housing Corporation to market all shared ownership schemes within a specified area. The Zone Agent for all our housing schemes is Share To Buy.

Other IDS shared ownership schemes include Koban Court in Hendon where original purchasers were all key workers such as teachers, NHS workers and police officers, although this restriction no longer applies. Other schemes include Genas Close in Barkingside, Queen Marys Gate in South Woodford and Mountside Walk in Clapton.

Although we can nominate when shared owners wish to sell on, such opportunities are relatively rare and we would always approach First Steps to obtain suitable applicants.

Right To Buy

You may have read about the governments plans to extend the Right to Buy to housing association tenants, enabling residents to buy their homes. The details of exactly how this will work are still being finalised. We will update this website once the governments policy becomes clearer and via our newsletter. We recommend you go to https://righttobuy.gov.uk for the latest news, where you can also register for updates.
