Unacceptable behaviour
We believe everyone—staff, contractors, and residents—deserves to be treated with dignity and respect. This guide offers a helpful overview of our approach to managing challenging behaviour, and the support that is available.
What is Unacceptable Behaviour?
Unacceptable behaviour includes any action that is abusive, threatening, or persistent in an unreasonable way. This can include:
Verbal Abuse:
Using offensive or derogatory language
Physical Abuse:
Intimidation or assault
Threats:
Any threats of harm or violence
Harassment:
Repeated unwanted communication or actions.
Discrimination:
Behaviour targeting race, gender, disability, sexual orientation, etc.
Unreasonable Demands:
Excessive requests that are beyond our ability to meet.
Unreasonable Persistence:
Constantly raising the same issue after it’s been resolved.
How we manage unacceptable behaviour:
If we consider a resident’s behaviour unacceptable, we will:
Issue an initial warning and let the resident know their behaviour is not acceptable and ask them to stop.
Set Boundaries and outline acceptable ways of communicating with us.
Restrict contact, and limit communication to a specific person, method (e.g., email), or frequency.
Intervene. A senior manager may meet with the resident to discuss their behaviour.
Suspend services. In extreme cases, we may suspend services temporarily until the behaviour improves.
Take legal action. If there are threats or physical violence, we may contact the police and take legal action as outlined in the tenancy agreement.
Support for residents:
We understand that stressful situations can lead to frustration. Our goal is to resolve issues constructively. We will always consider a resident’s individual needs and circumstances before taking action.
Support for our staff:
We are committed to protecting and supporting our staff. We provide training to help them handle difficult situations. We offer counselling for staff affected by abusive behaviour, and we put safety measures in place for staff who work alone.
What happens if action is taken?
If we take action due to unacceptable behaviour, we will inform you of the decision and how long any restrictions will last.
